Hi all - Zzippy encouraged me to join as he joined our site - www.jaxkayakfishing.com. My name is Andy and I'm one of (most of) you, i.e. a Brit. Maybe I should have called myself Limey Yank!

I live just South of Jacksonville, Florida, USA. Practically all my fishing is done from a kayak. But I "cut my teeth" in the waters of Southern England, mostly in the Devon & Cornwall area, particularly Plymouth.

Over here I almost exclusively fly fish nowadays. Our main catch inshore are Redfish, Spotted Sea Trout, and we also catch Flounder - around here they are Southern Flounder, the world record for which was caught in this area at 21lbs+! Now that's what you call a flattie! There are plenty of other species, including sharks! Thankfully I haven't caught one of THOSE yet. :?

Your site sure brings back a lot of memories and I'm sure I'll be a regular visitor. See ya'll around!

Hi Andy

Nice to meet you.

Zzippy and I have been out kayaking a few times now. Unfortunately the flounder here dont run quite as big as those over your way, but we're looking forward to getting 'a load' from our yaks nonetheless.

Your kayak is an interesting design -- nice and wide too - looks very stable. Zzippy's going to be working on an outrigger for his, then we'll have a stable platform from which to land our conger, ray and tope

Hi!

Yep, Mark has been giving us the skinny on you guys' activities. I don't have that kayak anymore, it was just a cheap starter for me. I now have an Emotion Exhilirator SOT. Hope you two are enjoying the OK Capers, that was another one I thought about. Hoping to get out Sunday morning but it will likely be windy and surprisingly cold!

Isn't that called water skiing when you're being towed at high speed?

Is the 'Spotted Sea Trout' a member of the Bass family, has that look about it?

pobolycwm - the fish finder is between my ears, the coffee machine is in my bag, and the head is wherever I stop to pee (can I say that?).

Brownie - redfish are members of the Drum family, as are spottted sea trout, funnily enough. They can actually make a drumming noise (more fo a grunting really) when you catch them. Oh, and we call the high-speed tow a "sleigh ride"!

Jimbo - RR, 100% correct. Been licenced since 1983 but not active nowadays..... 73

Idea

Maybe Speciman and ZZippy could attach ther marine craft to each other and make a YAK-a -Maran...

Look forward to the Demo @ the Fish-a Mathon..

ah yes a Yak-a-maran

Levrek I didnt confirm that I would be doing a demo at the fish-a-thon. I think that Zzippy and I will be away on holiday camping and kayaking with our famililes that week -- although I have to check the dates.

I still have bits to get for my FPO's kayak -- when we're ready I should be able to take members interested in kayak fishing out on an individual basis.. shes loaned me use of her kayak. Suitable clothing would be needed though.

Blimey, this is all getting a bit close to home. Didn't realise you lived down in Cider Country Brownie - I lived in South Petherton for a few years. Used to visit the "Glaazdunbry" zoo quite often. And Levrek - my last home before we escaped, er, emigrated, was in Basingstoke! In fact, when I lived in the West Country I seemed to move gradually eastwards - Saltash, Plymouth, Torbay, Somerset - and I always said Basingstoke would be my limit. Lo and behold, I ended up there and it finished me off. For a long time yokel, it was just tooooooo close to London. I hated it! It was probably the final catalyst that sent me to America. :?

I liked yak-a-maran, that was funny! But you can buy kayaks with outriggers, or even add them on. They are popular over here with people who like to stand up for sight fishing purposes. We don't do that so much around Jacksonville, the water can be a bit coloured. We have plenty of mud that is every bit as dark, smelly and glutinous as anything in the UK!! And we typically catch redfish and trout in water that can be as shallow as 6 inches!

I have fished in your neck of the woods before. I really miss Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. I posted a picture of a Southern Flounder in the gallery but I think these guys are convinced it is a fake, but it is real. Those things get huge! The Cape Fear area in North Carolina has some monsters, especially near what is left of the old Quarantine Station, on the Cape Fear river section.
I have been thinking that I need a trip back over there, I loved fishing just north of Tampa Bay, had some good times there.

Yep, I love it around here. There's some great fishing on the west coast too, but it's quite a ride. Hoping to get over there sometime this year.

Just sitting here waiting for my ride - we're off to a place that is stuffed full of bluefish and ladyfish. No yakking today, it's a wader job. Should be fun, just hope the thunderstorms stay away. :?

Biggest flounder I have caught is 4lbs. Biggest I have seen locally was 9lbs 10oz. But, yes, they can get very big!
