I,m visiting Dorset this june with my family, all of whom are mad keen fishing. We are staying in Chideock, near Seatown and West Bexington(?), which I understand is a good beach venue. I expect most of our fishing to be in the evenings (after we have done the usual touristy bit during the day!), but can anyone give any advice on species to be had, tackle, techniques, bait to use? Although I am experienced in my neck of the woods (Cumbria), I have little knowledge beyond!!! I was intending to bring our carp rods, which we use for bass fishing here, but will these be suitable for what we would likely encounter in Dorset

If you're coming in June, you'd best pack a couple of crash hats, the mackey-bashers will be out in force then. Your carp rods will be fine for any light fishing such as float and light spinning. TNH is resident on that part of the coast and is excellent at keeping us all updated of what's about and when. If you can get hold of a cheap beachcaster to bring (plus rest of course) then you'll be fine for any bigger stuff that may be lurking. The tackle shops in West Bay (Potters & West Bay Watersports) are good for any topical info, although that depends on who you speak to. Les in West Bay looks upon the glass as half-full, whereas with Martin it is always half-empty.
There's always gonna be some on here that would be willing to join you in a ragworm-drowning session at West Blankington.

Seatown can provide some great fishing without the need to travel to Chesil, it is a noted ray mark and some very big bass are caught here and at Charmmouth along with some big wrasse. Your carp rods will be fine if you can find some clean bottom near to the rocks and weed. A dexter wedge on a carp rod is fun for mackerel, (a bit early for gar, they usually turn up in the autumn.)
Have a look at my blog and send me a personal message a week before and I will give you an up to date report. The area from West Bay to Lyme Regis will give you better fishing than standing elbow to elbow on Chesil.
