On the quest for a suitable rod for a mad keen 12 year old club angler we came across the Mitchell universe II long rod ,priced at £64.99 at Christchurch Angling Centre
The rod has a Matt Carbon weave with some eye catching graphics, probably the first thing that grabbed his attention when doing his usual rod rack inspection at the tackle shop
Callums first impression when holding the rod was the overall weight, it is a very light rod indeed and proved well balanced with his Daiwa Emcast Evo 5000 fixed spool reel.
First couple of gentle lobs seemed promising as he was very comfortable with the rod even considering its 15ft length.
He was regularly getting 40 yards with an overhead lob with a 3oz lead , he was just getting into the swing of things. Changed to a 4oz lead and increased the drop added a little lay back with the lead and he doubled his cast WOW what a dramatic improvement , his confidence grew with the rod and he pushed himself a little further but to be honest after casting for 30 - 40 mins he was tiring so he called it a day.
Finally I got hold of the rod for a cast myself and gave it a lob ....... ok that was nice I though , next cast I gave it some more and it rewarded me in return with even more distance, next cast decided to really get some speed in the tip and the rod did its bit and threw the lead out of sight (bad eyesight) blimey that went I thought !
This is a long rod that I would use above a lot of others 4 times its price, it represents real quality that wont break the bank
Next week sees the rod out in anger for some fishing rather than just casting so will post how he finds the fishing side of the rod shortly
Sometimes his Salt Bass rods cant cope with the conditions or venue so hopefully this rod will fill that gap, fingers crossed :icon_cool
