 ile give it a go ,,
Hi Tugger ,,,,14ft rod sounds ok but what is it ,,,,,need to know see:confused: if its a 14ft ground caster ,then its not realy guna work with braid,
Slosh 30 is a non beach friendly reel , keep it for rocks or boat ,,,
I would not even try braid on a multiplier ,i value my thumb to much :eek!:, it might sound like a swear word to you ,BUT if you want to play with braid get a good fixed spool ,,, i use the penn 70s , thin long spool is the key for braid ,,well for me any way .
Braid at 20lb is a bit heavy but will do i use 14lb braid ,the shock leader has got to be tapered , coz i use slow action long rods i use a river blokes 14/35lb carp shock leader ,, never broke 1 yet in 4 years ,,
When you get that bit sorted u dont need to hurl big weights ,,
Then the next bit is streamlined clip down rig/bait set ups ,,
Tell us your thoughts , then we can go on ,,,,,cheers rich,,

Hi Tugger
LR is the main exponent of long rods/fixed spool and braid fishing. It is the way to go in 2008.....Mr Colin is mainly a multiplier/mono user as befits His Casting-Instructor status:notworthy
I think Colin was hinting for Lucky R to respond to your post.
Anyway.......the general rule appears to be as follows:-
Braid........fixed spool
Mono.......multipliers.
I have used braid for over 5 years, never had a problem on f/spools BUT would never use braid on my Abu`s.
To be successful using braid on a multi you would need a casting style as smooth as silk.....something I havn`t got. The main problem is that the braid tends to dig-in on the spool after several wind-ins especially if hauling in weed or a big fishie, then CRACK_OFF during casting.
It`s fustrating and bloody expensive.....with the braid costing £20 plus!
Also I can recommend using braid with a round cross-section....Diawa Tournament,Berkerley SDS etc...costs more but less prone to digging-in.
Welcome back to the Land of bait drowners....might see your down Southsea when the plaice show:thumbsup:

ps:LR got any further comments?

 Hi levrek nope youve sussed it spot on , ile leave the swingy up & down casty thing for collin to do ,,i cant do that any sence , but what i can do is the long rod ping , :eek!: & in a straight line outwards ,,,,, ,
Any way itle be drop & plop from the yak soon .. if this wind ever stops ,,,rich,..

Thanks Guys
I did use the braid on a 6500 a few times last year and have to say that the bite detection and feel was first class amd will still use it if i was fishing say in close on a nice calm evening. However a couple of Power casts with it and it went:blush::doh:. So didnt try anymore.
I am going down to see Phil Hyde:notworthy soon as he is rebuilding my Vmax and he uses braid all the time on his 6500 so will have a session with him on slapton with his braid and see what happens.

I've used braid on a Penn 525 mag.
Most anglers tend to be frightened in case they get a birds nest, all the time I've used braid I've not had a birds nest but if it does fluff up it just folds over on itself a couple of turns and stops the reel dead and you just pull the folded line off wind in and off you go again.
I have found that it is not much good in heavy/rough conditions as the lack of stretch in the line keeps pulling the lead out causing constant slack line.
Another point is that it's no good for rough ground as any damage is a weakness and breaks easily under load. The same would apply for rod eyes, they must be in perfect condition as any flaws can damage the braid.
I would also recommend using a softer rod rather than a stiffer rod to compensate for the lack of stretch in braid.
Even though I found that my casting distance did increase while using braid I don't use it that often as most of my fishing is over rough ground.
For those who are interested I used 80lb whiplash with a shock leader, the whiplash has the same diameter of 17lb mono loaded on a Penn 525 mag and often emptied the reel.
