i am thinking of buying a cheap multiplier to see if i can get on with one, so i dont wont to spend loads of money on a rod as well.
what i would like to know is can i use a multiplier on a rod that is ringed for f/s, i know that eventullay i will need a new rod as well, but cant see the point in spending out on a new set up and not liking the reels.

Debateable - FS rods have (on the whole) fewer rings, and are designed to have the rings downwards (under the rod) upon retreive, whereas multiplier rods have the rings upwards (on top of the rod) facing on retreive.

Using a FS rung rod for a multiplier reel CAN lead to the line rubbing on the rod due to the fewer rings..............................especially if you have a bit of a bend in the rod (fish on!)

For the short term, I guess it would be ok(??) to trial your reel before splashing out on a new rod.

Cheers,

I use my Slosh 20 on my f/s 12 powerstick, works perfectly for conger work. It suprised me how well it does work actualy, but then its a stiff rod.
I once tried a f/s on a multiplier rod..... definately no good, the bottom eye is too small and gives you line wrap.
Is there no one that can lend you a decent multiplier or at least fish with them for a night/ day? I think you would get on better with a quality reel.

spent £40 on one today, had a few casts on a school field and have to admit i had no problems at all and was impressed at the distance i got on a small cast (was using the running track and reached 100 meters+ everytime  ).
on bending the rod the lione didnt touch the blank so i might wait a bit before getting a new rod.
cheers guys

I recon these posts have just about covered all i can think of.
the main prob , as has been said , is ring spaceing when useing multi's on f/s rods, and ring wrap useing f / s on rods rung fer multi's.

I bought a multiplier recently after going through the same debate. Money well spent on an Abu 6500 Maglite. Loaded with 15 lb Ultima distance line and a 60lb shock. I have caught an 8 lb Bass in a choppy sea and fought hard, the finger control drag was a must as the fish was heading for France most of the time.

My field casting is better than with bait on, but you must resist the urge to power cast if you havn't been shown properly. It is dangerous to those around and you snap off all your gear regularly if its done wrong. I went to a casting day and watched the boys throw 5 0z leads 290 mtrs. I managed 155. If you are getting tangles tighten up so that the lead barely moves when you disengage the spool. Loosen it a little bit each cast to find out the optimum. Remember different weights and more bait have an effect, I was told to use the largest weight to start this means you have to set the clutch tighter.

I hope I am not teaching you to suck eggs.

got myself another one today(old one was faulty), its only a Shakespeare, but I'm happy with it, Ive got the hang of casting it, and with a 4oz weight i can get about 130/140 meters on a field, not tried thrashing it yet, although saying that the other day i hit it just right and empty ed the spool, i didn't fill it right up, as someone said its easier to learn if its only half filled, but i know Ive got slightly over 150 meters on it.
I'm hoping to get some RT braid for it soon.

as for sucking eggs, more info's better then none :cheesy:

Dont use braid, read the article in the forum "Braid"

Load your reel correctly as specified by the manufacturer, normally to about 1/4 inch from top, watever read the gumpf.

Try casting reel down for more performance, great if you have an extension for reeling in, but I find it difficult to hold otherwise.

Good luck in your casting.
